The Big Takeover 2 – 2025 – Residential

The Big Takeover is shaping up to be an incredible event packed full of excitement and entertainment, all of which takes a team of volunteers to make it happen and keep things moving, ensuring fun, challenge and adventure for all involved!

We are now able to offer volunteering as part of Royal Greenwich’s The Big Takeover 2 as a King’s Scout Award and/or Duke of Edinburgh Residential experience for those looking to complete their King’s Scout Award and/or Duke of Edinburgh Gold.

When: 22nd – 26th May 2025

Where: Hope Hill Campsite, Meopham, Gravesend DA13 0QJ

Who for: Anyone looking to complete their Residential section of their Top Awards – Note you must attend the full 5 days for you to receive the accessors report.

Participants are given the opportunity to experience a large-scale district event and gain some of the knowledge and skills required for an organisation such as Scouting to participate in such an event; from the pre-event setup, through the running of the event to the final breakdown on site. They will be given the opportunity to join a team of volunteers engaging with young people and volunteers from across Royal Greenwich Scouts to facilitate a smooth and enjoyable event.

Participants will be given the opportunity to interact with young people and volunteers, as well as being able to enjoy some of the camp’s attractions during downtime, both during the day and in the evening.

Arriving at Thursday lunchtime, participants will be engaged every day in different aspects of the event, from the initial set-up, running activities, helping around the site and the break-down at the end. of the event on Monday.

Details:

  • Camping – participants will be camping with the other Scout volunteers during the event. There will be a dedicated area for the crew
  • Catering – participants will be provided 3 meals a day, they are also welcome to bring snacks and drinks for outside this
  • Shifts – participants will be expected to “work” for an average of 6-8 hours on each day (from Thursday to Monday).  Shifts may be in the morning, afternoon, evening or even at split times across the day (this is due to the nature of the event and needed to adapt to event activities)
  • Costs – There is a cost of £10 to secure your space, this will cover your camping fees, food, a badge and a camp t-shirt! We will ask for this at a later date in the new year.
  • A chance to be a world record holder – more on that later!

Residential Timetable: (subject to change)

  • Thursday – arrive for lunch, after a briefing you will be involved in the set up of the event and assisting groups who arrive earlier to set up.
  • Friday – You will be making the site ready, you will then be involved in the logistics of the initial arrival of volunteers and parents, assisting with the carpark and directing people to their groups
  • Saturday & Sunday – you will be working with other volunteers in several areas, marshalling activities, dealing with any logistical issues and being a helping hand
  • Monday – There will be a World Record Attempt, we’ll need your help marshalling this as well as getting involved. After this you’ll be assisting with the closure of camp and helping coordinate the car park and pick ups
